Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States today. In 2014, around 15.7 million adults age 18 or older in the U.S. had experienced at least one major depressive episode in the last year, which represented 6.7 percent of all American adults. As many as 2 out of 100 young children and 8 out of 100 teens may experience serious depression before age 18.
Depression is a condition in which a person feels discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated, or disinterested in life in general. When these feelings last for a short period of time, it may be a case of "the blues." When they last for a much longer period, it may be something far more serious.
Chances are that everyone will experience some level or form of depression in their lifetime. Whether the result of some type of loss in your life, or something far more significant, we all have “sad” days at times but when those sad days linger we may need help.
John Thurman’s recent book, Get a Grip on Depression, is a positive first step in getting the help you need. The purpose of Get a Grip on Depression is to help you better understand depression and learn effective ways to manage it.
