My eyes widened, focusing on the instructor in CLASSEMINARS Advanced Personality Training. I didn’t need a stomping foot to realize the secret to personality success was easy. In fact, it was a hundred times easier than any other way. I scribbled the secret on my notes, listening for more clues. Like a military planner locked in a windowless room until he produced a completed battle plan, I concentrated on Gary Chevalier’s astonishing remarks.
Gary displayed an overlay of the personalities over four sections of the brain (front left, front right, back left, and back right).
God created us with distinct personalities or temperaments. Hippocrates discovered four basic types: Powerful Choleric (control-seeking), Popular Sanguine (fun-loving), Peaceful Phlegmatic (loyal and steadfast), and Perfect Melancholy (organized and creative).
From the four basic personalities listed above, which are far more complex than the simple description I’ve provided, everyone genetically inherits a preferred or natural type. Some individuals learn to use a personality type that isn’t their inherited one based on circumstances, upbringing, or other factors. We call this a nurtured personality type.
Gary explained the source of his revelation to our class. In Dr. Katherine Benzinger’s book, Thriving in Mind, she presents Dr. Richard Haier’s research which states, “the ‘electrical’ resistance within and between neurons in our area of preference is so much lower that we only use 1/100th the oxygen or energy when we use it to think. In other words, when we use our natural lead, thinking feels easy and effortless. By contrast, when using our other areas, each of which uses 100 times the energy—thinking is literally more difficult and exhausting.”
The area of preference or natural lead equates to one of the four sections of the brain. Front left—Choleric, front right—Sanguine, back left—Melancholy, and back right—Phlegmatic. By operating in your personality of preference, or natural personality, your mental processes flash 100 times faster than if you tried to solve a problem with your non-preferred or nurtured personality. Voila! The Easy Button.
The crux to the problem is determining which personality type is natural for you. Testing is a simple process that reveals the basic traits of your primary and secondary personality types. Knowing this information will help you operate in your strengths (natural personality type). With your personality eyes wide-open, you can sort out the fastest path to solve your problems and discover relationship success with others.
Understanding how your personality type works best for you and with others increases personal satisfaction, happiness, easier task completion, more harmonious home and work environments, and a greater sense of self-worth.
Go ahead and do it. Hit the Easy button.
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
